Geographical diversity gives Sri Lanka , rich wild life resources, conserved in 13 national parks and over a 100 protected areas. Among the best accessible and popular are Yala, Wasgamuwa, Minneriya, Kawudulla, Udawalawe, Gal Oya, Maduru Oya, Bundala, Lahugala, Kumana, Weerawila and Kalametiya. Animal species to be seen include large herds of elephants, leopard, sambur, deer, bear, wild buffalo, monkey, wild boar, jungle cat, mongoose, giant squirrel and crocodiles. The abundance of its bird life makes Sri Lanka an ornithologist’s paradise, of its 441 species; well over half are residents, with as many as 26 being endemic, occurring in their natural state only in Sri Lanka.
